Judges comments

I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to judge these classes. I awarded prizes in line with my interpretation of the standard. Many first class birds were left out of the tickets - I would have been delighted to own such birds. Thanks to you all and many congratulations to the prize winners.
Andy Kerr.

I had an enjoyable day with Andy Kerr and Simon Mckean sorting out what proved to be good field of quality exhibits. My strongest class were the Duckwing pullets, the winner showed herself extremely well and was just spoiled by a few missing thigh feathers.
The Pile males were another very good class with all in the class being well put down.
It appears that improvements are still required in the Birchen males if they wish to compete. Birchen females were well supported with some excellent birds on show. The novice class was also well supported with good quality Birchens.
I would like to thank young James Crowther for being an able steward. Also, I would like to thank all who supported the club show and cannot wait for the next opportunity to judge at the Club Show, if my feet will allow it!
Thanks
David Hall

How pleasing the challenge proved to be, faced with a fair entry of exhibits from around the country, with a deep breath and along with my steward Eddie MacNamee  we set about judging the birds. Eddie proved that he had an eye for the birds, although not always the feathered variety!!
With fellow judges, David Hall and Andy Kerr, we started with the trios and found some decent birds and it must be said that apart from the winners it was difficult to find matching birds, thus high-lighting the difficulty involved in showing a trio.
Then I judged the large males and the first exhibit a Pile cock was superb and became Best Large.
In the bantams, an array of birds were generally well shown, albeit some  with the common faults which the fancy are improving on such as length of back and the angle of tails and width of sickles, were still evident.
Birchen pullets were nice, as were the AOC Standard females which featured possibly my most stylish birds (silver/blues), four quite different birds all with pleasing qualities. The winner a Birchen won on fitness over a real gem of a Pile pullet that was spoiled in feather quality otherwise it would have pressed hard for top honours.
A good day, good birds and great fanciers, topped off with quality Christmas cake and fine port!
Thank you all
