MALE PLUMAGE: Neck hackle and saddle very light orange chequered (barred) with orange. Back deep orange chequered. Wing bow deep orange and light orange barred; bar grey and light grey; primaries grey; secondaries grey with outer edge bay banded with light bay to show a “mackerel” effect when wing is closed. Remainder grey and light grey banded.

FEMALE PLUMAGE: Hackle lemon, slightly chequered with black. Breast salmon, running to body colour on thighs. Tail grey, except the top feathers which should match the body colour. Remainder slaty partridge brown, indistinctly chequered (barred) with lighter colours.

IN BOTH SEXES: Beak yellow. Eyes, comb, face, wattles and ear-lobes bright red. Legs yellow.
